part one -- c o m p i l e --

As most people are, November Rain Davey was born. Her older sister's name was Eden Michelle, her older brother Dominic Steelhew, and her younger brother eventually became Knox McKagan. Needless to say, it was a source of some embarrassment to their superfan parents when Guns N Roses got old and became known less for their bitchin' tunes and more for their constant backstage douche moves. November's parents - who had been bestowed at the time of their own births with the slightly more common names of Nadia and Travis - would later mention being relieved they hadn't gone with their first idea and named Eden 'Rose' after the now infamously uncool Axl.

November was a high energy kind of kid. The kind who ran before she could walk, who would follow her older brother up trees and cheerily outpace her friends on her beloved red bike. She threw herself into a new passion seemingly once a month, but one thing that always remained constant was her creativity and tendency toward the new and exciting. She wanted to be a marine biologist, and a paediatrician, and an illustrator and a game designer and an actress. She was a smart kid who got average grades mostly because school in its grey uniformity failed to hold her attention. Some worried for her future, unsure how long it would take her to find what she really wanted to do. Others admired her energy and ambition, even if it had yet to find its final target. One thing everyone seemed to agree on was that whatever Nova did with herself, she would pull it off with aplomb.

part two -- h a l t & c a t c h f i r e --

When Nova was fourteen, her comfortable little world abruptly fell to pieces. She lost both her brothers to a car accident that also injured her father, and barely six months later her best friend committed suicide. No one saw it coming. There was no note, no explanation of any kind - one day there was a sweet, gentle, clever young woman and then the next there was nothing but a shell left behind. Nova wasn't the one to find her, never saw the lifeless body hanging from the doorframe like she'd seen the crumpled forms of her family in the car around her, but she saw them all in her dreams. Didn't sleep for days at a time. Heard their voices, all of them, begging, screaming--

Was it any wonder that she fled her own dreams to find someone else's?

She didn't realize what it was at first. They were just dreams, and she was so grateful for the respite from her nightmares that she didn't question them. Weirdly semi-lucid, she could walk around them at will but couldn't touch, couldn't affect anything. And no one ever seemed to talk directly to her. But it didn't matter. She didn't see Dominic lift his head from the steering wheel like he hadn't at the crash, all smashed eye socket and bloody glass, and ask her if he looked okay. Didn't hear the agonized scream Knox hadn't had time to give as he flew from his seat. Didn't have to field questions from the gaunt, pale form of Louise she never even got to see about why she hadn't been there for her. These dreams were weird, but they were better.

part three -- e x c e p t i o n --

Three years of therapy put Nova back on track, gave her the tools she needed to go back to existing in the world where she'd withdrawn from it. The same couldn't be said for her parents, though. Her father took it hardest - that made sense. He'd been there. Blamed himself for not making sure the boys had put their seatbelts on. The silence that had made its home in the Davey home was deafening. It hardly felt like a home anymore. Travis drank heavily and refused all support. Nadia became neurotic, going on long rants about tiny things, spending all her time shopping for things they couldn't afford and didn't need, let alone have room for.

Eden couldn't take it. She moved out, and was immediately branded a traitor to the family by her increasingly unstable parents. Nova spent all her time playing video games - as a seventeen year old, she was still at their mercy, but at least worked out quickly how to avoid their wrath. Be invisible. Don't ask to go anywhere or bring anyone home, ever. Keep her bedroom door locked so that her mother couldn't get in - she'd scream and threaten until she was hoarse, but couldn't break the door, and Travis who could have refused to. It was a long, lonely year. Nova's eighteenth birthday was ignored by her parents and spent, gloriously, moving in with her sister.

part four -- d e b u g --

Again everything changed overnight, but this time it was for the better. Eden worked in the fashion industry, which was a fantastic way to get hold of a lot of fabric to start cosplaying with - something Nova had wanted to do since childhood. She took a lot of pictures, went to a lot of conventions, gained a modest amount of recognition for her skill, her pretty face and her unashamed portrayals of white characters. Not all of it was positive, but she glowed under the light of a genuine achievement of her own. Her time was split between cosplay, video games, and her much less glamorous job as a pharmacy tech.

Eventually, though, the seedy underbelly of the cosplay world showed itself. She grew tired of the creeps who leered over her body and made disgusting comments about her despite being often decades her senior. Had enough of people online spewing racist crap any time she showed up as a non black character. Definitely could have done without getting freely groped by sweaty neckbeards with day passes because she was showing some skin. It was a good run, but the shine had worn off, and she knew she could safely hang up her cosplay hat with no regrets. What she started doing instead with her free time, on the suggestion of a friend, was posting gameplay videos on Youtube. She was playing anyway, right? And she was chatty, bright, interesting or so they said. It seemed worth a shot.

part five -- s u c c e s s --

Statistically, Nova knew she wasn't likely to make it on Youtube. Not really. She never expected to. Maybe a few hundred subscribers who knew her from the con circuit, some people who just generally liked the games she was playing - it wouldn't last long, just something to do. But some combination of factors singled her out to be one of the very few who gained traction. Whose subscriber count climbed laboriously to 10,000, then 100,000, and her first million seemed to come out of nowhere. Suddenly people were talking about what an effect she had on their lives. How they looked forward to her videos. That they looked up to her, wanted to meet her...

Emboldened, she turned all this attention into effort - put out more videos, tried livestreaming, showed up to conventions again but this time just as herself. Met some amazing people who made videos too, including a girl named Akira who turned out to live nearby, and with whom she became such fast friends it was like they'd known one another forever. Brands reached out to her for sponsorship deals. It was insane. It kept being insane. It was when a girl appeared at her apartment door gushing and asking for an autograph that Nova realized this wasn't going away.

It wasn't long after that that she moved out of Eden's place. Quit the pharmacy job she didn't really need anymore anyway and found herself a place in a gated community not too far away with a reputation for comfortably housing the weird and wonderful. Which... it turned out was true. The realtor actually warned her as much when she moved in, but she didn't really believe it until the day she was at the grocery store and actually watched a guy whose hands were full put something on a shelf that wasn't there for a moment while he shifted things around.

Well, if they could deal with that, then she supposed being a minor internet 'celebrity' was nothing.

splash page : first impressions

A giant at 5'2. Big hair, don't care. Bright black eyes. Natural makeup plus unnatural eyeliner. Graphic t-shirts featuring anything from Sailor Moon to House MD to the kind of sayings like don't grow up, it's a trap you'll find on Instagram fashion blogs. Jean shorts, or some other kind of shorts, basically all the time. Chunky jewelry and lots of rings. Converse, clearly home decorated. Chipped nailpolish. Smells like soap, 'ocean breeze' deodorant and the peppermint gum she's always chewing, though despite best efforts and even though it's never overpowering, non smokers can probably tell she smokes. Jury's out on whether or not she possesses such a thing as an indoor voice. Can often be seen around walking her dog.

diagnosis: dreamwalker

Nova still doesn't really understand what she can do. In fact, she doesn't even think of it as something she can do - she thinks of it as something that happens to her, because she has zero control over it. It just happens that sometimes, when she goes to sleep, she has weird dreams that seem to center on other people. People she's seen, but never so far people she actually knows. In these dreams, that feel completely different to her own, she's almost a ghost. Can move around freely, knows and is fully aware that she's asleep and dreaming. But she can't affect anything. Can't touch or move things, and for some reason anyone who features in the dream won't ever even notice she's there, except the person the dream is focused on.

The dreamer can see her, always. They don't see her every time - some of the contents of these dreams are pretty distracting, and often times she'll try to stay out of the way as much as she can, something telling her that she doesn't belong there and shouldn't be seen. But they always can, and she can always tell exactly which person it is the dream 'belongs to'. She can talk to them, has before, but doesn't like to. The whole thing feels weird and invasive, and she doesn't like to see the people whose dreams she's experienced in her waking life.

She's talked about the phenomenon to some of her friends, but none of them seem to have the same thing happen - even Akira with her floaty thing doesn't really get it. They occasionally try to suggest that she do something with it or about it, but none of their suggestions work. Sleeping pills only trap her in that world longer, and with no way out. Trying to get in the way or affect some facet of the dream world has gone badly for her before, and she's found out very quickly that even if a dreamer can't feel pain during a dream, if she's in theirs she can feel it just fine. So Nova just lets it happen, and tries to find somewhere to hide when it does.

This is Scout, named so after Scout from Team Fortress 2. He's a good pupper, even if he is still in the middle of his training, so slipups will happen. He means well though! Likes include treats, scritches, walks and showing off his elephant toy. Dislikes include tall people, anyone wearing a hat, the vet and not being allowed to follow mommy into the shower.
